Environment Analysis
The problem statement was broken down into three key aspects: Business, Customer, and Technology. Environmental Analysis was identified as the most effective tool to understand these domains, helping to identify market forces, industry dynamics, macro-economic trends, and key developments in the smart and sustainable home market.
Technology Research
Technological research was crucial for developing user-centric, implementable design solutions, while also providing insights into the type of data being collected and displayed by companies in the smart home sector. The technology research focused on:
• Understanding Smart Hubs and Data Sources
• Analyzing trends shown in competitor products.

Understanding Data Trends

Beachhead Market
Beachhead market was determined by considering various factors including the target user group, inclination of the users towards the sustainable power consumption and mandate towards installing solar panels in all newly built homes.
Through our research we narrowed down on the age group 25 to 44 due to higher inclination towards smart homes. Additionally we identified southern California for the beach head market due to the high population of our target age group and the title 24 Compliance which mandates solar panels.
22,850
Houses that are provided with construction permits in Southern California which is our beachhead market
100
Houses on average in a community, assuming we plan to launch in one community before expanding to a larger target market
40,000 USD
Of revenue generated in one community by selling Schneider product at a subsidized cost of 400$
User Interviews
Interviews with new home builders and new home owners were conducted to understand the user needs. These interviews were semi-structures. Participants were identified on social media platforms like Linkedln. The findings from user research were represented with the help of Personas.
Crazy 8 Ideation Method
Based on the information gathered, a crazy 8 session was conducted where each member in the team came up with their own solution ideas. These ideas were voted on to determine the design direction.

Final Direction
At the end of ideation, three solutions ideas where picked that were pitched to the client (Schneider Electric).
• Collaboration between Samsung, a big player in the smart home market and Schneider for sustainability
• Private labeling of Schneider Electric products
• Working with production builders instead of custom builders ensuring a larger targetable market while providing a subscription model for Schneider products making the partnership beneficial for the builders as well
The final recommendation of the design team after understanding the needs of the company was to partner with production builders. For the final solution, we combined two of the above solutions: Collaborating with Samsung and production builders.
